That argument might work except that while Ukraine was claiming they died, Russia was claiming they surrendered. If Ukrainians can post videos on the net then they were fully capable of seeing Russia's announcement. But surrendering or simply outmaneuvered and captured soldiers doesn't make for good propaganda to rile up the citizenry sufficiently to take up arms, nor the world to send aid.
