The idea in the OP did seem dumb. I was specifically responding to the posts that spawned from Skinned's post
Another thing is that calling kids "gifted" is actually harmful. It creates a sense of shame when they don't perform at the level they are told they can, or when they take longer tracks to their career.
Honestly this is just another thing we should reform about American schools.
shame as a negative is subjective, if kids are taught to be motivated by shame its positive, if they're taught to be demotivated by shame its negative, and to be fair if they're not taught either they often default to shame being a negative.
mad you're not in gifted class? study, standard exams in another 2 years is your spot.
call them whatever term we want to throw away again in 5 years when that's deemed offensive as well. (see: "retarded" > "mentally retarded" > "disabled" > "special" > "gifted" > "otherly abled" etc etc etc). we're literally in a world in education where a very real amount of time gets spent every year doing sensitivity training trying to outrun the clever and cruel little minds of young children, and they get outmaneuvered every time. kids always win. just like the Streisand effect on the internet, try and make a change and the problem grows. teach them the periodic table, send the disruptive ones to the principals office no matter if it makes them stand out and miss class, and shut the fuck up.
