Gifted classes aren't something anybody can join like sports are.

Gifted and sports aren't really comparable. Gifted are classes separate from the rest of the other classes. Sports are extra curricular.

We should just get rid of gifted and replace it with more academically focused extra curriculars and higher level classes that anybody can join or test into.

Separate classes for a "special class" of kids isn't something we should encourage IMO, and theres plenty of data to show that gifted kids dont really have better outcomes anyway when you adjust for socioeconomic factors. Gifted kids tend to just be kids who already have advantages in the form of higher income and parental involvement. They're rarely actually "Gifted" in any meaningful sense. There's also a wealth of data to show that labeling kids as "gifted" does more harm to the kids than good because of the shame it induces if they don't perform at the level they feel they should.

i was in the TAG program and i was poor as dirt, i got there by being smarter on standardized tests. and i'm not a genius. so check mate.

also we're cherry picking the single idea from the list in the OP that may even be semi acceptable, the rest is total bunk and will just make smart kids dumber and dumb kids feel better. whoever greenlit this idea is an utter moron.

The idea in the OP did seem dumb. I was specifically responding to the posts that spawned from Skinned's post

Another thing is that calling kids "gifted" is actually harmful. It creates a sense of shame when they don't perform at the level they are told they can, or when they take longer tracks to their career.

Honestly this is just another thing we should reform about American schools.

shame as a negative is subjective, if kids are taught to be motivated by shame its positive, if they're taught to be demotivated by shame its negative, and to be fair if they're not taught either they often default to shame being a negative.

mad you're not in gifted class? study, standard exams in another 2 years is your spot.

call them whatever term we want to throw away again in 5 years when that's deemed offensive as well. (see: "retarded" > "mentally retarded" > "disabled" > "special" > "gifted" > "otherly abled" etc etc etc). we're literally in a world in education where a very real amount of time gets spent every year doing sensitivity training trying to outrun the clever and cruel little minds of young children, and they get outmaneuvered every time. kids always win. just like the Streisand effect on the internet, try and make a change and the problem grows. teach them the periodic table, send the disruptive ones to the principals office no matter if it makes them stand out and miss class, and shut the fuck up.

Shame is overwhelmingly and naturally destructive. It's very difficult to turn shame into positive motivation. It's only real function is to be negative motivation against bad behavior.

I'm not advocating for changing the name of the classes of students. I'm advocating for abolishing the idea of classes all together. Just don't group them. If a student needs additional help there's no need to create a label for them. If a student excels in mathematics, then put them in higher math courses. No need to call them gifted. Labels are harmful in both directions.

as i said, turn shame into something positive takes a bit of teaching on perspective.

now, of course, i dont mean we should shame people about things they cant change. Down's Syndrome, birth defects, being a packer fan, etc.
