My Father in Law is a store manager at a Cabelas down south. They have a serious problem with theft but they can't actually do anything about it.
He has wild stories of people coming in and stealing (like your post) and walking out with no resistance. They are trained to NOT do anything about it and if they intervene they'll get fired.
People walk in - throw on a $200.00 Northface and stuff their pockets with whatever and just walk out the door. No care in the world.
The only thing they can do is report that person for trespassing and tell them they're no longer welcome in the store. They can't actually address the theft.
Apparently, each store has a very large slush fund that's used to offset the cost of stolen goods along with a hefty insurance policy.
They address the theft by writing it off and they lose nothing and they get to keep employees safe from liability.
The system is set up for them so effectively that they can get robbed and lose nothing. Whenever we got robbed at pizza hut or whatever it was ultimately like who cares, they will write it off in taxes, nobody got stabbed by the crack head right?
A north face jacket is polyester and fake feathers, they rob people when ever they sell one of those ok coats for 200 bucks. Same with Patagonia polyester shirts for 200 bucks. Lol. Patagucci.
