If a lack of ethics/ money making were the only motivation of the media, there would be left- and right-leaning outlets in roughly equal number and quality.
The massive liberal bias of virtually the entire mainstream media cannot be explained this way. Imho, the real explanation is that the main cleavages in American politics used to run perpendicular to the sociodemographic profile of the typical journalist, but realignment saw most journalists (college-educated in a non-STEM field, urban, "worldly", secular) fall into the liberal camp.
Something to understand is that conservatives are far more homogenious in America than you are probably used to, because we are shoved way up in the top right corner of the spectrum compared to other nations. Many first world countries would label Democrats as too right wing to be taken seriously. On a world stage even Bernie wouldn't be considered particularly left leaning. So when you want to go right, there's very little of the spectrum remaining to cover. They are really just competing with each other over who can be more batshit insane because on policy they all basically agree on the same thing.
Contrast that with left-wing media. There's a huge amount of room to go left in America. You can be conservative on most issues and still be left of center, you can be a 70's style liberal, etc. etc.
It's also worth noting that Fox News alone can easily get double the number of viewers of the runner up, and there's a massive amount of right-wing coverage online like Infowars, Blaze TV, etc.. So it's not really meaningful to say "there's too many liberal channels". There's also a ton of conservative channels, but they're more concentrated.
