The key word being "surpluses". Right now, the rich countries do not have surpluses of vaccines, and it would not be justifiable (or politically feasible!) for them to send relevant quantities of vaccines to poor countries while their own population isnt vaccinated yet and suffering from various degrees of lockdowns or restrictions as a result.

Well.. We do and we don't at the same time. Through the covax program we (Ger,NL,Greece basically EU) bought Astra Zeneca made in South Korea and shipped them to the Philippines yesterday. (about half a million). Those are more vaccines than SK has used themselves atm. So in a way surpluses are already sent other countries while we are in a lockdown.

Imo, morally, we shouldn't even wait until we're fully out of a lockdown as well.. Instead being somewhat slow rolling out the vaccine in the EU, should benefit poorer countries, and would speed up vaccination rate there.
I'm actually expecting this would benefit the global immunization reducing possible mutagens in the future... But instead, most wealthy countries are too focused on national interests, to see the bigger picture.

don't worry anyway the eu is now explicitely asking italy to unblock the vaccines

must be fake news, i heard it was EU officials that are blocking the shipment, and blaming italy was "obtuse".

I'm beginning to believe the British have a very different view on their vaccine than the rest of the world..

Something like a nationalistic blindspot or something.. It's the best vaccine out there guys, we got it !

afaik it's a reasonably safe and effective vaccine that i personally wouldn't have a problem getting my shots with. that said, SOME brits certainly do have a blindspot, and combined with their hatred towards the EU that often results in ignorant posts full of lies and exaggerations, like claiming the EU was demanding british vaccine supplies...

Anti EU sells in the UK pre, and eve more, post Brexit. News there is more often narrated through a nationalistic British perspective. Hence that article header. I can understand some of it. But it is going a bit over the top.. And yes, I'd take the Astra Zeneca as well.. It's not bad, but it's fair to say results have been a bit dubious from the start and they barely made approval because of it.

It's the EU who have been demanding more doses from AstraZeneca.

The published data coming from England and Scotland shows more than an 80% reduction in hospitalisatons after one shot of the AZ vaccine, and the same rate of protection compared to the BionTech/Pfizer vaccine. That's why countries like Germany and France have been backpedalling when it comes to allowing older age groups to take the vaccine, as well as correcting previous statements made, like Macron saying it was 'quasi-ineffective'. This has led to people in these countries refusing the AZ vaccine which is putting them at risk

If anything, our government is probably hoping vaccine hesitation remains high in the EU so you can catch up to our death rate

'Combined with their hatred towards eu'

Hm I think your projecting some real insecurities in your posts.
I live in the UK and on the whole I support working closely with the EU.
The UK has 65 million people, 4 distinct languages and great diversity.
To generalize them all in the way you have, shows a reall lack of maturity on your part.

Not sure exactly what you mean by blindspot. Perhaps your referring to the belief that Aztrazeneca vaccine is less effective than others. Which I believe was over exaggerated by those with
lateral motives.

While it may prove to be less effective in time. It may prove to be just as effective. In either case, its definitely saved lives through reduced risk of transmission.

The UK government has alot to answer for with over 100 thousand people dead with a positive covid test.

So vaccine rollout has been welcomed favourably. Although not closing the countries borders sooner, was completely unforgivable in hindsight.

Factually incorrect

How about this: you Brits can keep your Astra-Zeneca vaccines which were designated for the EU, and in return, we keep the BioNTech doses which were intended for the UK. Deal?

The death rate is appalling. Do you think the government dealt with border controls effectively?

Also Frances active cases total is alarming. Over 3 million live cases.

Considering the german health officials told people Aztrazeneca wasn't safe for 65's

When it clearly is. Then. Sure, keep them.

Germany's vaccination rate appears to be less than 3%
So they probably will be needed.

After years of asking british people to stay in the EU, it didn't take long for the knives to come out when they left.

That first part is a bit misleading, the EU is demanding to not be cut as much in deliveries as it has been.

The rest that follows is due to inconclusive research done in the first place. Most of it didn't have to happen, but here we are.

The Macron quasi ineffectiveness argument still seems to hold up.. I mean, not being hospitalized is great, but its not as good as not giving the virus a chance to spread (a-)symptomatically and or mutate. And then comes the quasi effectiveness against already existing mutagens.
