I think part of the issue with Hong Kong as a topic is that everyone saw it coming. The moment that UK released control and the threat of an international war over any attempt to seize it would result went away, the "China will take over" conclusion was already known.
Hong Kong held out far longer than expected, and it is ironic that it was during a virus spread from China itself that they used the distraction to get it done with very little protest.
There's also the fact that big tech and big media is super in bed with China due to the extreme customer base and doesn't wish to offend them by criticizing, and debates over Hong Kong and it's inevitable fate have been raging for over 20 years...
That it finally happened was news, but given that we all knew it was happening and had beaten the horse dead as a discussion topic years ago, it was not particularly interesting as a current political discussion.
