That drove up the cost for people actually wanting to get value out of college and pursue a career. Went to a state college myself with ABET EE/CE programs at half the cost of the big U. Most of the peers there were more focused on parties though (outside of 2+ years in science/engineering students. Also, had to pay an 'athletic fee', although that did not give me access to use the athletic facilities and gym, just to watch D2 football get wreckt.

yes the discretionary type fees they charge are insane. plus most state schools require you live on campus for 2 years, with rent 2x that of a local apartment, with food 2x that of buying your own. we also had a HUGE fee for facilities and it was a massive scam. we did the math and figured out we were basically paying 100$ a month for a clogged gym thats not open 24-7, it was insane.

Yeah, and the staff at your clogged gym was probably setup with fafsa based employment. Probably not really working, just getting paid to study behind the desk.

I wouldn't recommend college to anyone unless they have shit figured out prior. Its a trap, even more so for the poor.

yup that was exactly it. actually they installed a card swipe to get in system, so their entire job was handing out towels. 2 employees open to close just to hand out towels.

Drug war putting men in prison so woman have no choice but to fend for themselves and an economy in which wages have stagnated combined with growing cost of living and then just when you think it couldn't get any worse, an opiate epidemic brought on by big pharma companies affecting every single generation and the changing of outsourcing/automation away of the manufacturing industry with no real policies to create or train people for new jobs that could make similar pay. Then you look at criminal justice issues that not only have racial disparities but even class disparities and this is what you end up with. And an education system that just doesn't effectively prepare people for adult life or serious pragmatic training for careers. The goal of school isn't to tell kids to follow their fucking dreams, it's to equip people with skills to follow their dreams.

How hard is it to escape poverty really? Was reading through this and had some thoughts

https://www.listenmoneymatters.com/why-it-is-so-hard-to-escape-poverty-in-america/

But if through an accident of birth, the cards were stacked against you, you’re in for a long, tough slog. Escaping poverty isn’t out of your reach but you are going to have to do absolutely everything right. The passes to say nothing of the endless perks afforded to the lucky ones will not be afforded to you.

If you get caught with a joint, you’re going to be arrested and likely end up with a criminal record, especially if you’re black or Hispanic. No affluenza defense or acquittal for you. If you don’t have the grades to get into college, no fake crewing background wrapped up in a $500,000 bribe is going to change that for you.

...

The articles makes an issue of drugs, bad grades and health care access and my thoughts are what's so hard about not doing drugs and focusing on doing well in school? As for healthcare i dont think it ought to become an issue until a much later age so that wouldn't explain why young people can't make it out of the ghetto by the time they're in their 20s.

I work at a bar in the hipster part of town and I have seen this firsthand. Parenting is probably the single biggest advantage/disadvantage an individual can have besides outright economic pedigree and living with a single mom is a sharp hill to have to climb.

I'm currently still out of work because of the plague but it is on Fremont Street in Vegas.
