Columbus, the thirteen colonies, the war of independence/tensions with the brits were all one block. The slaughter of native americans was briefly covered with the example of the trail of tears, but only as a small excursion from the larger topic of slavery and how it lead to the civil war. But again: those topics were all covered really quick. We spent about two or at most three class hours to go from the end of the war of independence to ww1.
Manifest destiny once came up as a tangent during religion/ethics classes, but not in our history classes.
seriously, you just did a couple of hours and never went back? i can tell you that is DEFINITELY not representative of history syllabi in germany, and i'm just talking about basic courses. btw, something we both completely forgot to mention is the cold war, which was also covered.
to be fair, i don't remember exactly how much time we spent on american history, but i am certain that america was the main focus after europe, and was covered extensively. compared to what we learned about asian history for example, that's quite a lot imo - especially if you consider how short the recorded history of america really is.
