Pretty sad the lack of respect for elders in his post. No wonder why Asian cultures look down on ours.

Absolutely. I wholly reject the idea that those older than you are inherently deserving of respect.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere Missouri where a good chunk of the population didn't even have a high school education, and only my teachers had a college education. Really hard to accept the idea that elders are inherently worthy of respect when most of the adults in your life are idiots. One of my best friends grew up in a really wealthy area and he said that every adult he interacted with had a minimum of a Masters degree. After I showed him my home town and we interacted with some of the locals he basically said "If I grew up around these people I wouldn't respect adults either". Was a fun road trip.

Cool story.

Respect for your elders is not based on education, nor is someone who isn't formally educated an idiot. I went over my cousins house today. He has a high school education and runs 2 successful businesses making a fuckton of money. I'm getting my 3rd degree. He is objectively better off than me at least currently and for the near term future. Is his standing in society somehow lesser than mine just because he's less educated? I'd argue him being a successful business owner is more respect worthy than my standing.

Respect for your elders is good etiquette, something that's practiced in almost every society. Not respecting your elders is just a sign of immaturity/being a punk.

Not anymore. I left and would never move back. Every time I go back its just further reinforced that theres a substantial difference between the people I interact with now and the people from my home town.

Yes, there can be smart but uneducated people, but youre gonna have a hard time finding a person like that who stays in the small town with no opportunity around all the people who are both uneducated and idiots. Also, I don't have a problem making a blanket statement that people without a high school education or GED who are under lets say 70 are idiots.

It might be good etuquite, but Ghot has shown himself to be a terrible person not worthy of respect. Him being an elder doesnt change that. In many ways it makes it worse.

I'd argue that there is a difference between on the one side having respect for someone's life experience and achievements, for the hard work he's done, the family he's raised, the impact he had on his community; and on the other side having respect for someone's intellect/education/knowledge/worldview/professional success. I think that it is easily possible to respect the former but not he latter, or vice versa.

In the end, the experience Thor is describing just goes to show that sometimes, different types of people are better off going separate ways. I would even say that a ton of the division and political polarization in America is caused by the fact that the presidency, the federal government and also the states have too much power compared to the local level. This forces "red america" and "blue america" to find compromises on too many issues although there is no longer a sufficient basis to find a workable compromise.

Corruption and money in politics are certainly a big issue, and I would totally support term limits for Congress. I just dont think that this alone would solve the underlying fissure/rift that's opening up across the country. The values, beliefs and perspectives of "red" and "blue" America are continually drifting apart, and if we neither manage to close the rifts again nor to disentangle red and blue American from one another, then sooner or later there will be a breaking point.

I think term limits would help... a lot. For example, it might be harder to "buy" the media if you were only in office for say... 4 years.

Boomers ruined my country, being old is not a metric for respect.
