Good move. For profit prisons just create too many perverse and disadvantageous incentives.

As Knoopie said, 72% of the people held in detention by ICE are in private facilities - which means that ICE/the federal government runs the remaining 28%. So since privately run centers will no longer be allowed in Cali past 2028, ICE will have to make its Cali-based facilities run by the federal government, i.e. run them by themselves.

Deep blue Cali might very well try to block these government-run ICE facilities, but I dont think such attempts would get very far.

ANY reason Cali has for eliminating private prisons... I would imagine is designed to somehow affect ICE's ability to function efficiently in Cali.

NO. CA should build enough State prisons, so they won't NEED private prisons.

If you think that private prisons are still a thing just because there “aren’t enough state prisons,” you really need to just stop talking.
Forever.
I lose brain cells every time I read what your fat fingers and hamster brain have conjured.

Sorry I hurt your feelings.

How about we don't build more prisons or lock up kids for profit anymore?

After having lived in Cali for 20 years, and watching Cali's actions lately, it seems to me that Cali is trying very hard to accomplish a few things...

1. Orange man bad.
2. Everything they can to aid and abet illegal immigrants.
3. Trying to force the fed to force Cali to secede.

On topic, and from the OP:

In a proposal deemed long overdue to prison reform activists, the California Legislature passed AB 32 with the aim of eliminating all private prisons, including ICE detention centers, in California by no later than 2028.

You posted something true!

2. Everything they can to aid and abet illegal immigrants.

I'm cool with this. They're better people than Republicans.

3. Trying to force the fed to force Cali to secede.

That would be awesome. Red states in the US would shrivel and die without our tax base. I think it would be fun to watch them suffer.

How about they (and every other state, and the federal government) legalize drugs, so there's no incentive to lock up non-violent drug offenders?

That's what they did in Seattle. Not legalizing strictly but not arresting anyone with 3 grams or less in possession I believe. That could be meth, black tar whatever.
Didn't work out very well

Got a good link for that? Not saying you're wrong, just want to read info about it (at work now, so don't have a ton of time to play with Uncle Google at the moment)
