Yes, zero wiggle room. When the economic advantage of things invented to go to the moon gets calculated it's never close to break even.

Agree. Although the most economically impactful of inventions would have probably happened anyway, sooner or later.
Followup question is : can the same be said about going to Mars now, would it be worth the investment?

Basic science cant be trusted to business since there isnt sufficient profit motive at the time of discovery. They wont see a return in a sufficient time frame to make it worth while.

Id say based on the track record Mars is a virtual sure thing to be worth the cost.

The track record of going to moon? That is one case not a track record. While it did revolutionize many technologies and gave them a turbo boost, the same won't necessarily happen to mars. It could end up involving marginal improvements to existing technology and lots and lots of expensive space launches to test and get things right etc.

Almost any developed country could put a man on the moon today, it's just a matter of... Money and priorities.

Considering basic science research as a whole more than pays itself back and the incredibly expensive trip to the moon was no exception I'd say that's a pretty good reason to believe going to Mars would be in the same category

It could be, but its a huge risk even for an investor as big as the American federal government.
They would have done it by now otherwise.

All investment is risk, this is an investment with an amazing track record and no reason to expect a less than stellar return
