We should definitely shame smokers, and anyone who drinks more than 5 drinks every other week, and anyone else who's making unhealthy choices, because we're all super concerned about peoples' health.

we do shame smokers and alcoholics.

I am definitely not a romantic, but my wife is basically deaf to romance so it works out. I'm INTP, she's INFJ. Same approach, but she's more emotionally aware than I am, and I'm more rationally aware than she is.

well INTPs are less romantically inclined than INFJ, the issue with the latter is one with expression as opposed to lack of romantic awareness.

self loathing smokers aren't exactly a new concept either
addiction and obesity are epidemic diseases, parts both physical and mental. To what degree we can encourage people to change on the psychological side, we should.
To tell fatties or smokes or alcoholics that they're alright and we should just accept their lifestyles is equivalent to saying we should just forget about curing the physical diseases and let people die

No, it's saying that different people are in different places in their lives and that pretending that social pressure that's going to pile more self-loathing on them is going to help them get out of a shitty place is fucking ridiculous.

This is just an excuse to be a smug jackass, let's be honest.

...which is not shaming . I encouraged my friend to take much better care of himself but I would not go so far as to make it emotionally painful for him .

I have a friend who is morbidly obese. We got super drunk at his mom's house on Halloween (they throw a huge party every year) 2 years ago and he promised that if he had the time, funds, and know-how, he'd go to the gym. We've been going 3x a week since last February with no plans of stopping (we found time + funds and I learned some srs workout stuff from a friend in college) and it's really cool to see the changes in his body already. He hasn't lost a ton of weight (diet...) but he has lost some and he looks significantly healthier overall + his fitness is obviously better. Before he'd get winded pretty frequently doing mundane things, now he can run a mile then do an hour and a half workout and still have the breath to call me an asshole after we finish :P

...not only did you totally miss the sarcasm but you went on to blame misinformation for what is clearly an emotional disorder .

So your fat friend had an emotional disorder, no wonder you two were such great friends

Yeah I mean i certainly don't think shaming is the correct route. Most of the time they aren't clueless, they know it's unhealthy to maintain their current lifestyles. iirc (open to discussion about it) negative reinforcement has demonstrated minimal longterm success as a motivational factor for lifestyle modification. Positive motivation has higher success rates. Giving someone a reason to be healthy... their kids, parents, a spouse, and even pets can go a long way.
