He's going to have to make a stand for the debates - but whereas other Gop candidates are going to be afraid to steer away from the party line, he could potentially be left/right/middle or all the way into Trumpland. (wherever that is). If Obama motto was Walk softly but carry a big stick, Trumps slogan should be I'm Large and in Charge (and you're fired if you don't like it)

I agree insofar as he's serving an important purpose: he's cluing in a sleepy electorate to what the Republican party truly is in 2015.

Debates have a powerful impact. Perry lost a shit ton of support during his "oops" moment, Cain did well during the first few and it rocketed him to the top. Romney did well against Obama during the first debate and he saw a significant jump in his numbers (and then lost them due to 47%, hurricane, etc.) Anyway, I really don't know the circumstances that would lead to a GOP victory in 2016 outside of Rubio really catching fire.
