ah, so i did, my appologies.
"but he was a religious jew and never himself told his followers to be anything other than that."
Exodus 21:24-25
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
Mathew 5:38-39
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
the ten commandments in so many words are repeated through out the new testament, and for the most part the new testament is fair game.
ill give you that he bent things a bit, but he never came out and said explicitly not to follow the commandments, but did say many times that you should. also, eye for an eye is more of a concept than an actual commandment.
this also applies to what icemage referenced in matthew 15 and mark 7, where jesus says that its not what goes into the mouth that defiles, but rather what comes out of it. jesus never says, though, that its ok to eat sehllfish and pork. mark (or paul) assumes that from what he said. if you look at the context, though, and keep in mind that jesus repeatedly spoke out against hypocrisy of making a show of doing things without true belief behind it, it becomes clear that thats really all he is doing here. indeed, he even says this sentiment explicitly:
"6He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“ ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’b
8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”"
