Israel continually and regularly strikes Syrian airports and assets within Syria. This isn't a recent phenomena but has been happening for years, just type in google and you will see dozens of articles from 2018, 2022, 2023, etc. I would understand if there were missile barrages coming from Syria like from Hamas, but Syrian Army is hanging on by a thread to begin with, they do not have the capacity or will to fuck with Israel. Do they pass on weapons and have close ties to Hezbollah? Oh no doubt, so i understand why Israel is motivated to strike, but my personal opinion is when they are basically hanging on by a thread from turning into Libya 2.0 you take it easy to not tip the fragile power. No one wants the goat lovers in power.
This is an example from today. It's possible this is 100% true but it's also possible Iran is rushing aid to SAA to reinforce to fight off the rebels. I mean Israel just announced a ceasefire with Hezbollah, logically it would make way more sense this aid is being rushed to fight off the rebels.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/iranian-plane-suspected-of-ferrying-arms-to-hezbollah-blocked-by-iaf-over-syria-overnight/I guess Israel got caught by surprise by this recent offense, just like the SAA itself. I'm just sceptical because Israel very evidently has no interest whatsoever in Assad getting toppled by jihadists who are fervently militant and antisemitic. Heck, Israel can clearly have no interest in Syria getting even just destabilized.
The previous status quo was perfect for Israel, with relative calm under a wounded Assad who poses no threat to them whatsoever and who, out of a position of weakness, gives them free reign to strike targets in his own country as they wish. I just don't buy that Israel would be foolish enough to do something as self-defeating as supporting the HTS and their ilk.
