it means draw a circle around the number 1.

"draw a line around" must have been how they said "circle" back in the 1960s.

its really not hard to understand do you actually struggle with this? are you ESL?

You would fail this depending on the examiner.

Black applicants could be failed for something as simple as a single spelling or punctuation error. However, many examiners chose to deceive test-takers by changing the rules or interpreting paradoxical questions in different ways.
 For example, although question 5 says to “circle” something, questions 1 and 4 say to “draw a line around” something. If the examiner insisted a circle was not a line, the applicant failed.

Are we really arguing that people without a fifth grade education should vote?

This came a decade after black people had the constitutional right to go to public schools. If you don’t have a fifth grade education ten years later, we’ll idk what to tell ya.

No, I am 100% serious when I say if you cannot prove a fifth grade (11 years old) education, you should not vote in the first place.

Nope

"The literacy test—supposedly applicable to both white and black prospective voters who couldn’t prove a certain level of education but in actuality disproportionately administered to black voters—was a classic example of one of these barriers."

https://slate.com/human-interest/2013/06/voting-rights-and-the-supreme-court-the-impossible-literacy-test-louisiana-used-to-give-black-voters.html

It was clearly directed toward them, cu next year btw.

Nice article with no facts and sources, only opinions from clueless writers who speculate about the past.

Since you only care about opinons from bubblehead writers.. here is one opinion:

What about the majority of inbreed cousin fucking rednecks in Louisiana?
what if they outnumber the lack of fith grade black person, but dosen't want to registrate as a woter because of the literacy test?

My main opposition of this thread is the speculations from persons about history. Whitout a full coherison that a historian whould have.
No thought about the red scare and so on?

But the fact that alot of wannabe historians tries to smeer modern polictics to the past. Indicates that; acourding to their beliefs modern politics is flawless and the failure of todays society must lie in the past.
That philosophy is bad and hinders progress and work that needs to be done with todays politics and thoughts.

Btw I don't see how a fifth grade (11 years old) would be able to finish this test in less than 10 minutes. The test was wrong and was created by absolute terrible people who should have been jailed.

If you read the first words on the test this is administered if you cannot prove you passed the fifth grade.

If you cannot prove you passed the fifth grade, you should not be allowed to vote.

Why is this even a conversation? We should bring this back today honestly.
