its a chicken egg situation. the cause is sugar/corn. now is it the govts fault for allowing the sugar/corn lobby to gain so much power? or is it the fault of the self serving lobby itself? and really at the time that sugar started to seep into all facets of the american diet lobbying wasn't really needed, that was the early days of the FDA when they were chasing down snake oil, not overly sugar snacks. but the lobby under the guise of muh freedum has stopped any legislation to counter it for decades.
It's a combo of personal responsibility, sugar lobby and government enablement. IMO all play a role and people tend to focus on one over the others to either internalize or externalize the blame. None are wrong, and all play a part.
Blaming purely government is like blaming the parents for giving a kid money and then him going to buy heroin with it. Blaming the sugar lobby is like blaming the dealer for the drug problem. Blaming the user while accurate also misses the external forces that enabled & enticed it.
