An example of this is Wal-Mart and other retailers internal memos acknowledging that raising minimum wage typically results in bigger profits, but still lobbying against it becuase they lose control over workers.

Are you sure? Cause I have heard the opposite. Walmart supports raising the minimum wage, because it would drive the little mom and pop stores, their competitors, out of business.

WFH does save a lot of money, but it's a mistake to assume capitalists are only interested in making money. They are also interested in maintaining control. An example of this is Wal-Mart and other retailers internal memos acknowledging that raising minimum wage typically results in bigger profits, but still lobbying against it becuase they lose control over workers.

I forsee that a mass change in WFH will only happen about as quickly as monitoring software catches up.

Well, most of the minimum wage jobs are the ones which can't be performed remotely anyway. The maintaining-control aspect should be much weaker for higher-qualification office jobs (at least the ones which can't be automated or outsourced). Also note that demographic trends imply that the balance of power in these sectors of the job market is poised to shift toward the labor side over the coming years.

Minimum wages driving mom and pop shops out of business is a myth. The observed data around actual real world minimum wage increases has been small businesses doing better because it increases spending in the economy.

The lowest wage workers also have the least ability to save, for obvious reasons. They're already living paycheck to paycheck, so having more money just means they can finally get that car fixed or maybe afford to eat out once a week. This spurs all business activity and leads to gains that drastically outweigh the costs.

This was the subject of the nobel prize in economics two years ago and has been repeated several times since.

hybrid all way. Do 3/2 hybrid/office now.

Fully remote would suck IMO as i think it will cause a lot of societal issues. People need to be a around other people, at least sometimes, and I say this as an introvert. Sociologists and society in general still hasn't fully mapped the issue of digitazation of our world. The art of conversation is dying and you have more and more socially awkward people, this is a net negative long term imo.

I would miss being onsite at least some %.

Otherwise, the only office interaction is facing a screen. Semi-distant coworkers become stale pen pals.

No big preference either way though!

I still refuse video calls for the most part. I can't stand them. It's not remotely the same as being in person.

The interaction is so vastly different when in my case you fly to have a meeting. There are side conversations, human gestures that happen, etc. Its a completely different experience. You make little connection on video calls, and I haven't found it to be constructive for things like negotiating a new USA. Blabbing on a screen does not hold the same weight as being in a room together.

I don't think so. Human behaviour is different. I'm not going to bother sifting through studies, but I'm sure after COVID they exist to support that humans interact differently. Tone, body language, actual attention given, its all completely different. You could have the same commanding person giving the same speech on screen but its going to feel entirely different in person. Half the people probably have a second or third monitor up at this point.
