If Trump had done the same thing, WaPo, NYTimes et al. would be full with dozens of pieces about how dangerous and unprecedented this is, how Trump is trying to undermine democracy and morphing into a wannabe dictator, yada yada.

Probably because Trump went out of his way to install hacks who were loyal instead of competent people.

If this is concerning will depend on who Biden replaces them with. If he replaces them with loyal hacks, then it's a concerning move. Otherwise, I mostly see this as purging people who showed themselves to be incompetent under Trump.

For now I'm willing to give him the BOTD because Trump's appointees were likely not fit for the role, so you've got the normal firings and appointments that comes from a new administration + removing Trump's hacks which will make it a larger removal than normal.

So let's put it on our calendars to re-address this in a month or two when the appointments have been reestablished, and see what came of it.

The purge included "...veteran officials who served under both parties." The notion that these officials are somehow far-right extremists doesn't hold up remotely to scrutiny.

It is concerning because it has no precedent and violates norms which even Trump managed to respect.

Not all of them are Trump loyalists that got fired. I expect the number is higher because many of them were Trump loyalists, so you have the normal turnover from a new administration, plus the Trump loyalists, and the latter group makes the number higher than is typical.

Trump filled these institutions with hard-liners. He did not respect norms just because he didn't fire people. By all accounts, Trump didn't grasp or care about the importance of these kinds of institutions in the slightest. He spent most of his presidency actively ignoring them. And so he basically just filled them with sycophants when an opening happened, and called it a day.
