I'd assume most Jamaicans have African background because of this, and wiki says Jamaica is 92% black.

I'm sure that's a fair assumption. But in the same fashion that we don't say Spaniards are streaming across the southern border (we say Mexicans, Guatemalans, Columbians, etc), I don't think we characterize Jamaicans as Africans.

missing from this conversation is the fact that most black people utterly lack national heritage. as they were whitewashed in plantations and barred from sharing culture with their children, and many lacked writing or written history.

a large part of the reason most black people are simply americans is because claiming africa as a heritage has no specificity, its a continent larger than Europe and people dont claim "european heritage", its irish, english, french (yuck), etc.

So I'm not sure the conclusion here. Am I offensive when I say the black guy. For instance there's about 6 black people in town, it's a pretty easy reference when needing to point out a person.

Seems to be nitpicking.

If a bunch of black people started streaming across the border to Mexico we'd say Americans are streaming across, and when asked about their race we'd say African-Americans or Black Americans. It doesn't really matter if they went Africa --> Jamaica --> America --> Mexico, we would call them the same as the ones who went Africa --> America.
