The number of people killed with coronavirus shoots up in Catalonia to 7,097. The jump compared to Tuesday, when there were 3,756 officially counted, is because this Wednesday, for the first time, the Health Department of the Generalitat has also offered the data sent to it by funeral homes.
These include not only deaths in hospitals, which are the ones that have been taken into account until now, but also deaths in residences and other dependencies, such as homes. Also all those transfers that, without having tested positive, had the symptoms of COVID-19.
In this way, at least 1,810 transfers in nursing homes have emerged, 456 in homes and 62 in socio-health services that until now were not included in the daily count of the Generalitat. The rest, according to Health, would correspond to those who died in hospitals, which are 3,855 (which means 99 more than yesterday). Those missing until reaching 7,097, a total of 914, correspond to locations "not classifiable" due to "lack of information".
The number of infections in Catalonia this Wednesday stands at 39,375 positive cases of coronavirus, although this figure would be much higher if possible cases are included, according to their symptoms, which also appear for the first time in the Generalitat's balance sheet. The number of these seconds reaches 55,457 cases.
The Generalitat continues to report deaths in hospitals, which is the number they send each night to the Ministry of Health, but from now on they add the information sent to them by funeral companies, with which they hope to provide a little more light to a figure, that of the deceased, which the health authorities themselves had recognized as incomplete.
At the beginning of the epidemic, in fact, the Health Department began collecting only the data on deaths in hospitals, but on April 8, when assuming responsibilities in nursing homes, it also included dead residents for its part. The problem is that it was still not possible to add both data because an old man who died in a hospital appeared in both counts.
After the complaints, the councilor of the branch, Alba Vergés, required the employers of the funeral companies to send him every day the cases registered in his services, both deaths with confirmed coronavirus and suspects. The information from the funeral homes, which started arriving a few days ago but was not released until Tuesday, also includes the date and place of death.
As for the other data, since the beginning of the epidemic a total of 2,789 people have been admitted to the ICU - there are now 1,307 - and 17,290 hospital discharges have already been achieved. There are also 5,712 toilets and 5,755 infected residential professionals.
