To be honest, we've been headed towards this for a long time. George W. Bush was a disaster, but as a man treated unfairly. The left overreached with Obama, which led to an even larger pushback on the right. The Democrats came to see the leftist drift of the 2000s as a permanent fixture of history, and were shell-shocked when Obama's overreach and a historically bad candidate led to Trump. The Democrats proceeded to spend 4 years travelling down the woke rabbit hole, while institutional attacks on Trump from the FBI and others led to intense paranoia among the Republican base.
Now we're at a point where both sides hate each other to a degree that would be unthinkable twenty years ago. I'm not sure anything can be done to change that. The cultural split has become far too vast, and it needs to be decided one way or the other.
"that GWB was a disaster, ok we'll put up a black guy" - democrats
"oh wow, i guess ANYONE can be president. Obama isnt qualified, he's just a legal scholar and senator. we'll put up a reality TV star and career conman with more ex wives than Obama has lifetime sexual partners who will treat anyone who shows any dissent with ruthless poor character insults and Evangelicals will call him the messiah" - GOP
i mean im of course being hyperbolic, but the move from GWB to Obama was an increase in polarization, but proportional, an integer increase in tensions. The transition from Obama to Trump is a nuclear bomb, such a rapid crescendo it hurts your ears. and this imo is due to racism, partly against obama which sparked a flame, then the DNC's insistence on expanding racism to anyone who voted for trump simultaneously enraged non-racists and made real racism blend in. i wouldnt even say there's a "rise in racism", its just been dragged from the corners of society and spotlighted.
edit: and no one talks enough about how polarization rose under GWB but people were scared shitless to call out iraq/afghanistan after the Dixie Chicks got fucking annihilated out of show business for it. that was the first cancel culture, dare to suggest dead marines are bad and you're an unpatriotic hack who needs to lose their job. fucking right winged karens.
