To be honest, we've been headed towards this for a long time. George W. Bush was a disaster, but as a man treated unfairly. The left overreached with Obama, which led to an even larger pushback on the right. The Democrats came to see the leftist drift of the 2000s as a permanent fixture of history, and were shell-shocked when Obama's overreach and a historically bad candidate led to Trump. The Democrats proceeded to spend 4 years travelling down the woke rabbit hole, while institutional attacks on Trump from the FBI and others led to intense paranoia among the Republican base.

Now we're at a point where both sides hate each other to a degree that would be unthinkable twenty years ago. I'm not sure anything can be done to change that. The cultural split has become far too vast, and it needs to be decided one way or the other.

Republicans impeached Clinton over a blowjob.

Fuck outa here with "would be unthinkable twenty years ago" lol

To be fair, the blowjob wasn't nearly as egregious as this:

After a totally unrelated investigation ran head first into his sex life.

You guys screamed for years about how THIS IS A HOAX! THE INVESTIGATOR SHOULDN'T BE INVESTIGATING THAT!

Well, Clinton's investigation was about as far off the rails as you could get from the original intent lol

He's lucky it wasn't today or he'd have been meetoo'd.

How we felt about Clinton and Bush is not close to what is going on today, but yes, I'm sure we could push the origins of rot out further if we wanted.

"that GWB was a disaster, ok we'll put up a black guy" - democrats

"oh wow, i guess ANYONE can be president. Obama isnt qualified, he's just a legal scholar and senator. we'll put up a reality TV star and career conman with more ex wives than Obama has lifetime sexual partners who will treat anyone who shows any dissent with ruthless poor character insults and Evangelicals will call him the messiah" - GOP

i mean im of course being hyperbolic, but the move from GWB to Obama was an increase in polarization, but proportional, an integer increase in tensions. The transition from Obama to Trump is a nuclear bomb, such a rapid crescendo it hurts your ears. and this imo is due to racism, partly against obama which sparked a flame, then the DNC's insistence on expanding racism to anyone who voted for trump simultaneously enraged non-racists and made real racism blend in. i wouldnt even say there's a "rise in racism", its just been dragged from the corners of society and spotlighted.

edit: and no one talks enough about how polarization rose under GWB but people were scared shitless to call out iraq/afghanistan after the Dixie Chicks got fucking annihilated out of show business for it. that was the first cancel culture, dare to suggest dead marines are bad and you're an unpatriotic hack who needs to lose their job. fucking right winged karens.

The left promised transformational change. They spent the better part of ~8 years talking about changing demographics and how whites would die out and why that's a good thing. Obama made it clear what he thought about dumb blue collar voters clinging to their guns and religion. There were a number of religious liberty fights over Obamacare.

Right or wrong, the right saw these things as an existential attack on their way of life. That explains the 2010 and on blowback a lot more convincingly than "Obama Muslim" ever did.

you're not wrong from the fringe right winged perspective, but holy shit at "whites dying out and thats good" and religious liberties of obamacare being the takeaways they came up with.... not to mention a stupid ammo ban was seen as a reason to start getting ready for civil war.

im just fine with blue collar workers, someone has to make min wage to watch my machines make stuff, might as well be 40 year olds with shot knees and a hard liquor belly.

i know you’re trolling but the faux elitism against the working and middle-class really is pervasive in our country, and it’s increased proliferation was quite noticeable 10+ years ago

10 years ago things like universal healthcare, increased min wages, and fears of automation slash UBI werent a part of the conversation.

as each is folded in the working class eats up corporate rhetoric and sides against their own interests.

imagine trying the help a group of people only for them to demonize blacks, poor people, and immigrants on behalf of corporate overlords that make a windfall while eliminating them as a class of labor. would u view these people with respect? think they're smart? no, of course not. the blue collar worker is bought and paid for, only when they're unemployed will the spell break. i should know, im the wizard.
