This is me just thinking out loud without a shred of proof but imagine this scenario.

Neither side wants war. Neither side wants to appear weak or yielding. Is it too much of a reach to think that some compromise can be reached through back channels, so the situation deescalates?

The US lets Iran bomb some predetermined base while the Iranians can spam footage of this 'victory' both sides can frame what they did as a victory, lines in the sands are drawn and we go back to a sort of frozen conflict? They tested each other's boundaries and now both sides know.

Honestly if i was Potus or the CIA chief that's something i'd be willing to negotiate.

There might be a chance of back channels being used to deescalate with a normal president but we have a president Twitter.

This now seems best case, and still plausible.

hope so

Update: Senior Defense Department official tells
@Newsweek
Zero US casualties at the moment. News came in at 8:28 p.m. EST #IranAttacks

so in a show of force iran has apparently killed a lot of their own and a lot of iraqis today

Given that war in Iran is very unpopular in the US, I think it makes sense from a strategic position for Iran to poke the US just enough to illicit disproportionate response. Iran's goal is to survive and negotiate with a Democratic president. If Trump wins in 2020, Iran will have to rethink their strategy. I'm not sure what they do in that scenario.

This is probably them trying to save face. Make a show of aggression, limit the damage so lessen the likeliness of a response, threaten to escalate if any response.

Both sides get to walk away and stop the escalation. Looks like a "win" for the US -- Killing a top general and no real response -- Looks like a "win" for Iran as they destroy a base..

when did they destroy a base?

media reports are very conflicting at the moment, fluid situation

some say 0 damage, some say "some" damage, other saying casualties

garbo we shouldn't care about because rocket attacks happen in the middle east all the fucking time

They shot 10+ missiles at a base, they'll report that they destroyed it whether they did or didn't...

I can assure you, the base is in no way shape or form destroyed. There was minor damage(considering), and non US casualties.

That's what I assume. This is how 99% of rocket attacks go in these shithole countries

TFW John Bolton got fired as National Security Adviser for being a hawk and four months later Trump started a war with Iran.

Correct. Been through a couple myself. I'm not saying they couldn't do more damage if they really wanted to, but we all know what happens when they decide to make a real engagement.

Why doesn't Trump just tweet that there's no longer a threat from Iran and their proxies around the world? It worked with North Korea.
