Restraining an individual threatening lives is not police brutality or militarization.
Situations such as these (imaginary or not, because yes, they do happen) cannot be handled by treating the perpetrator like he/she is a child in daycare lmao.
People who are mentally ill, drugged up, drunk, completely enraged by something, or just off their rocker arent going to stop swinging around said metal pole because some social worker who poses zero threat offered them a snack, a nap, and a few encouraging words.
lmao what about that dude who was all drugged up and murdered some lady and started eating her in the middle of the road in Florida years back? Im really sure if somebody just offered him a snack or a nap he wouldnt have murdered and ate that woman lol.
Or Big Lurch lol im sure he really just needed a timeout in the corner, maybe that wouldve stopped him.
Anything less than restraint as a starting point would be considered soft, yes.

oh sorry, it was a homeless man, not a woman and he wasnt killed, but still
