It's really trivial that more lives could have been saved by an earlier shutdown. Theoretically, the most lives would have been saved by imposing a shutdown in early February. Which would obviously have been absurd.

The real question is whether an earlier shutdown would have been recommended based on an informed tradeoff between competing epidemiologic, broader public health, economic and psychological considerations.
The answer is probably 'yes', but a simplistic "could more lives have been saved" doesnt do the complexity of the situation any justice. I'm not really sure if Fauci just wanted to answer a trivial question or if he wanted to offer a subtle criticism of Trump's slow and clumsy reaction.

We could play the what if game all we want, it's a futile exercise. If Franz Ferdinand never got shot, if MLK never got shot, if i would of bought zoom stock a year ago. Hindsight is 2020 and almost no one ever makes the objective 'best' decision, it's incredibly petty in my opinion to Monday morning quarterback based on realities we know today and try to assign blame for a situation that was outside reasonable human control.

Meh, I dont know man... when it comes to coronavirus responses, the what if game is not all hypothetical - we can look at different responses in different countries and compare them, at least to a certain degree. The reaction in the US, the reaction by Trump most definitely fall on the slower and less effective side.

The "could more lives have been saved by an earlier shutdown"-question is still simplistic and bogus. And since a proper answer to the actual question "should we have shut down earlier" requires knowledge not only of epidemiology but also about economics, sociology and psychology, Fauci is not in a position to give a comprehensive and accurate answer anyway. No single person is.

After a few days of deaths dropping in the US, they're spiking today, with the highest daily total I've seen to date (over 2200).

Edit: Looks like France's numbers spiked today too, although not higher than their previous highs.

And the country is a federal republic in which a lot of the power is deliberately with the states instead of the central, federal government.

Trump doesnt serve at the behest of the governors, but the governors are not serving at his pleasure either. The president and the governors are competing power centers. The specific power this squabbling is about does rest with the governors though, not the president. Tldr: Trump is wrong on this one, end of story.

Indeed, but I'm not the one making dumb comments.
