What the hell is happening in Belgium?

Belgium is one of the only countries that counts deaths both in and outside hospitals, and deaths both confirmed and suspected of COVID-19. So this also includes nursing/elderly homes where a lot of people died (and probably due to Corona), but those people haven't always been tested nor moved to hospital care.

It will be under reported here.

In American healthcare, where you can't say a spade is a spade without a test and where medical providers can't give real medical advice without a lawsuit, a lot of these deaths will be undetermined imo.

Researchers will be able to derive the number of COVID deaths by looking at the excess mortality compared to the norm.

2017-18 flu season had 80-100k deaths, once since less than half of that.

We can easily rule out flu though.

I was scrolling through my youtube subscriptions today and there was a live stream of the NY governor's briefing.

Very impressed with how he communicates on the detail in a personable way. If only our own politicians talked as matter-of-factly.

I mean anyone that's objective understands that Trump doesn't make these decisions in a vacuum. Fauci just reaffirms something that most people who understand how the executive branch works already knew. There's literally teams of experts, convening and briefing the president and vast majority of time the president yields because he realizes if the people who are experts think this is way then that course of action is probably best. It's not much different how Obama or Bush operated. Bush didn't decide himself to go into Iraq, he was advised by his intelligence/defense infrastructure. Obama didn't decide to bail out the banks on a hunch, there was a team of advisers, mostly experts in the field that advised on the why and the what ifs. People are just so hyper obsessed with Trump that they think he some sort of dictator like figure, something you'd find in NK where what he says gets done.

Yeah Cuomo is quite good when it comes to public speaking. Democrats fucked up by nominating old boy Joe over Cuomo.

It's really trivial that more lives could have been saved by an earlier shutdown. Theoretically, the most lives would have been saved by imposing a shutdown in early February. Which would obviously have been absurd.

The real question is whether an earlier shutdown would have been recommended based on an informed tradeoff between competing epidemiologic, broader public health, economic and psychological considerations.
The answer is probably 'yes', but a simplistic "could more lives have been saved" doesnt do the complexity of the situation any justice. I'm not really sure if Fauci just wanted to answer a trivial question or if he wanted to offer a subtle criticism of Trump's slow and clumsy reaction.

its a bit of a mindfuck to even think of who the DNC nominee would have been if we knew the worst that was coming. betting favorite would be Bernie with healthcare concerns, or Yang with people's income running so dry, but I'd have voted for Tulsi. Her preparedness and calm demeanor would have been invaluable in all of this.

We could play the what if game all we want, it's a futile exercise. If Franz Ferdinand never got shot, if MLK never got shot, if i would of bought zoom stock a year ago. Hindsight is 2020 and almost no one ever makes the objective 'best' decision, it's incredibly petty in my opinion to Monday morning quarterback based on realities we know today.

that's going to take on a really weird meaning after this year.

It's completely confusing and unclear..
Your president acted irresponsibly we all know it and there's proofs everywhere.
