Biden is lucky that he can still argue with the pandemic to justify even the slightest semblance of border protection against the nuts in his own party. Without it, he'd have to own up to the fact that all the open borders ideology which was on display during the Dem primary is an impracticable pipedream and be torn apart by his own base, or pull a Merkel 2015 and be torn apart by Republicans and independents.

Yeah, and he actually tried to follow up on this promise during his first term in office... until lobby groups pressured him into doing a 180° and he became much more lenient in his border policies and his rhetoric on the issue during his 2nd term. Then, the entire Democratic party went through a seismic shift to the left on all issues of race and migration during Trump's tenure. Nowadays, if Biden tried to mimic what Obama did from 2008-2012, significant parts of his own fucking party would call him a racist and be in open revolt.
