How much money was saved by the poorest in the rural areas who could now buy a refrigerator to store food? How about the people who's lives were saved having access to phones? How much did economic activity increase as a result of this activity? Business can be run much more efficiently when, ya know, there's electricity. This article takes the most basic factor, cost in dollars, and ignores everything else. The assessment of cost in dollars isn't even done well since it doesn't take into account extra activity generated.

Just for clarity, I'm open to the idea that rural electrification was better left to the "free market", but you're not going to convince anybody by posting a libertarian circle jerk. I've heard before that solar panels and other transportable methods of generating electricity might be much further along now, but in the end there was a huge cost to not having electricity in large areas of the country that I think it tilts towards government action for national welfare.
