I was born and raised in the north, by parents and grand parents that were born and raised in the north as well. However, I still don't think anyone should be destroying statues, paintings, movies, books, etc., because some folk might be offended.

IMO, offended is a state of mind. In itself there's nothing really offensive about a statue. This crap that's going on now is sort of like the book burning in Germany in WW II. It's just plain stupid. I'm sure that somewhere in the US there is a statue of George III, but I wouldn't be "offended" by it. It's just a statue about something that happened in history.

It's like the painting: Mona Lisa, believed to be Lisa del Gioconda 1479-1542. You can be pretty sure that she had slaves/servants. Are we gonna burn that too? Where does it stop?

Should we destroy anything that happens to offend anyone... Pretty soon there won't be anything left, and we'll all be back living oin tribes and spending our days killing each other over dumb shyt things, because there will be nothing left to remind us of previous mistakes.

Are you dumb? Noone is going out every sunday to worship Stonewall Jackson (my nickname is high school) any more. Its a monument to our history so that we can learn from it

I can't make it any clearer than: 'I'm not saying destroy them. Put them in a museum.'

I understand what you're saying. The problem I have with this, is that it's just one m,ore step in the burying of US history.
Next year, it'll be well don't put those statues on visible display in the museum, they should just be stored in the back room. Etc., etc., etc.

What will we do in 10 years when there are a bunch of say... muslims who start protesting the American flag. Saying it offends them, it reminds them of... w/e.

Where does it stop? Where it should stop is before it starts.

I think you look at each statue individually, weigh up the pros and cons of their actions in life and judge whether it's reasonable to keep them on the street.

No history is being erased, it's something that should be remembered in the appropriate manner (like a museum) and not outside government buildings or on the street.

It matters greatly where these statues are held because it's the difference between education on historical figures and implicit endorsement of their actions.

All over Africa warlords are still exploiting and trading slaves. But I guess it's not allowed to mention it cuz no white men involved.

Has anyone considered that statues of controversial figures in those kind of countries should be removed?

If not, why not? lmk
