Looking at these past few days... where Fox News is doubling down on COVID denialism, followed by the President doing the same. If Trump loses, one big reason is that the cult never held him accountable for anything. They take cues from him, they defend whatever he does, and thus he's not getting input that would influence him to adjust.

Trump could've come out of this hospital visit and stressed the need for people to take safety precautions. He could've even stressed that the country can't be shut down, but there's ways for all of us to stay safe. He could've turned it into a presidential moment. He failed... because the only input he gets are from ignorant sycophants.

At the end of the day, Trump supporters will try to blame the deep state, the fake news, illegal voting, or whatever else for his loss. But it would be more accurate to blame themselves.

Biden's new message on all his ads of "to rebuild the economy we must get covid under control" is a really good choice.

if trump fails to curb the virus his big talking point of the economy is moot.

It's an effective political slogan. On the substance, I'm not sure if it's actually accurate though. Or let's rather say it ducks away from the real crux of the issue.

No western country has gotten covid under control so far. Most were able to limit the damage in terms of infection numbers and death toll somewhat, but they dont have it under control and are not in a position to genuinely reopen their economies. As things stand right now, it seems as if the economy will remain in shambles and continue to suffer until a vaccine has become available and widely distributed. Which will take at least another 6-9 months, if not longer. It's time we acknowledge this reality instead of running after this idea that everything would be fine if only people wore their mask more reliably.

Shrugging off the debate about how to best preserve the economy under these circumstances is an important policy discussion, and shying away from it with a slogan like the quoted one is not constructive. A more competent politician than Trump would be able to exploit this weak spot. But Trump still doesnt even understand that his planless denial is an even worse approach than Biden's weaksauce stance. He's a hopeless case. I just wish the alternative was better than what Biden has in store.

his latest messaging makes it clear, shifting from "it will disappear in summer" to "we're handling it quite well" to now "we dont need to handle it, its nothing to worry about, we will live with it".

its how brainwashing always works, it's not a problem, then i fixed the problem, then it was never a problem (also i didnt fix it).

america seems increasingly less interested with who can fix problems and more interested in who takes problems seriously. this is a problem for trump, because the guy "taking problems seriously" in 2016 was him. he was against china, willing to build a wall, wanted the military modernized, wanted the VA addressed, etc. no solutions that worked in reality on paper, but he was taking them seriously. 2020 is a HELL of a year to try out "everything is fine" rhetoric.

as someone ina 75 person company where 2 people wore masks previous to our out break that now has 50+ employees either covid+ and out, covid+ and returned, covid test pending, or burning vacation days i find this type of statement moronic.

i have friends at other companies with masks on all day, they've had a few outbreaks of 3-5 people then its contained.

no masks = virus runs wild.

when i live in an area where people shop with no mask on, work with no mask on, etc. i think ur statement is quite silly. shaming people into wearing masks is exactly what we need around me. it wont fix the economy, but its direly needed. im not lying, 50% of people in my area never wear a mask no matter what. since the pandemic started. they dont even own one.

The willingness to wear masks has not changed all that much in Europe across the past 4 or so months, yet almost every European country is currently experiencing surging case numbers, many of them dramatically.

Masks work from spreading the aerosols somewhat, but the bigger issue is we're compulsive about touching our face. On average we touch our face 16 times per hour...

That's probably even higher with the fact that you have a piece of cloth on your face that you constantly have to adjust, your face gets itchy, etc.

Masks are definitely not the end all fix all here.

So if i have the math here right for your stance:

"people are not wearing masks and havent changed their stance" + "cases are raging in places where people wont wear masks" = "we should stop focusing on masks and just live with the surging cases"

this rests on "people will never change their minds" mentality, which is the slipperiest slope in politics. im a centrist pragmatist obsessed with constants in politics, and even im not that pessimistic about masks.

ive personally seen people in my company who went from "masks are dumb, you're all sheep" to fearfully grabbing masks and wearing them 8+ hours a day. as these outbreaks continue to spread we have an opportunity to change minds on masks, and "we can live with it" is the antithesis to that.

the "end all fix" is likely a long series of vaccines strung out over 2-4 years until we eventually get on top of it. its also a private business solution more than masks. at least if people respected mandates. but when u have the potus anti masks and ur governor mandating it people lean on the potus rhetoric to justify their stance.
