All jokes aside, the odds that everyone this guy robbed or assaulted called the cops are pretty low, this culture literally has songs on billboard charts about killing snitches.

I think he's being held up as a symbol by people worried about injustices in America, because he was suffocated to death by police for 9 minutes while people watched. Focusing on his criminal history is an attempt to justify his death, distract from it, or discredit the protests spurred by it.
