The first one reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case. The bystander effect is nothing new, the only new thing about it is now people spout their hypocrisy on the internet.

Yeah totally. Diffusion of responsibility. And I completely hate the whole idea of "spreading awareness"...the illusion of doing something while doing nothing....worse in principle than the buying of ethical experiences in grocery stores with "organic" products, where people seek to cure the ills of consumerism...though consumerism.

I don't think buying food is the best example of consumerism gone bad. Buying local, organic, sustainable, free range, etc. is definitely more ethical than not doing it.
