Nothing about the original phrasing was wrong, it was factually correct and gave readers a truthful impression of the matter. Editing the article to sugarcoat Biden's behavior of touching and sniffing women and making them uncomfortable - this objectively made the article less factual. This was NOT a case with a legitimate reason for an edit.
It didn't sugarcoat it. It was awkward phrasing. Previously in the article it notes that other women have accused Biden of unwanted touching, so it's not like they didn't mention it.
Quote
“No other allegation about sexual assault surfaced in the course of reporting, nor did any former Biden staff members corroborate any details of Ms. Reade’s allegation,” the report read. “The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable.”
Without knowledge of the accusations, what does this sentence imply? Something different from the actual reality. It almost sounds like he pulled a Trump and just randomly kissed women on the lips.
