There has been a lot of peripheral issues that has been distracting the masses attention the past year or so (Epstein, Corona virus, woke/cancel culture, etc). Also, i think the original gut punch of Trump being president of the US has slightly faded. Seems like most people I speak with about politics IRL are rather jaded and apathetic. Sure, i still see zealots on either side but they're few in numbers.

I wonder if it'll heat up in the coming months. I very much agree that 2012 and 2016 especially were much more wild and unconventional.

hi my friend! hope you are doing well and staying safe!

Actually when I stop to consider that Trump got impeached over an attempt to stop a Democratic candidate the shit show level goes up.

I suspect they'll have a difficult time heating it up much. From the moment Trump won the Republican Primaries, leftist politicians and the Media both have been shitting themselves over everything. They've taken quite literally everything to a scale of 11 out of 10, and tried to panic everyone with a bunch of mostly nonsense.

All too many don't really care what the media is claiming at this point, because they proved themselves to be biased, not above fabricating stories, and more concerned about pushing an agenda than providing actual news.

I don't doubt, however, that since there currently IS a panic regarding this corona virus thing, that'll be blamed on Trump, and attempts will be made to use that as a bludgeon to convince the American public that Trump is unfit. But who cares? Most rational people will simply point at China as the origin of the virus and say, "Uh, Trump's been saying they're our enemy for decades. They hid the severity of the virus until after it had hit the US? Shocker. Once it'd hit and we knew there was a real problem it was too late to really stop it? Big shocker. Maybe we should have more presidents who take the threat China poses seriously."

But then again, the left has been relying on sensationalism from nearly the moment Obama got elected. Rather than, "Hey, let's talk policy and get it done!" it became about "First black president! First First Lady as head of State Department!" "FIRST FIRST FIRST!" Nobody cares about "firsts" at this point. Unless the left can put forward a candidate who has a solid policy basis that is doable, rather than wishful thinking, and makes sense, they're going to have a hard time.

Trump was apparently impeached over absolutely nothing, given he was acquitted. So the shit show level on that score still falls to the left's sensationalism.
Note: Clinton's impeachment falls under the same category, except in that case it was the right's sensationalism.

The 2012 nominee for the Republican party became the first ever senator to break rank and vote for the removal of a sitting president, but the left are the ones being hysterical.

The 2008 nominee was criticized as being a RINO by the time what would have been his first term ended.

And in 2016 they elected a literal fucking reality TV star.

One of the parties is hysterical, and it's not the ones moving so quickly that they've ostracized their presidential nominees.

I am doing well! Work has kept me increasingly busy due to this virus. Haven't had a lot of time to JSP. Hope all is well on your side.

This is the only real sitcom moment so far IMO.

Media is very good at being the boy who cried wolf. This is why I think most people are Jaded. Every headline is a doomsday prophecy and we've been doing quite well a country pre Covid-19.

2012 republican nominee, we talking Romney? A guy who the left called racist, sexist, someone who is basically hitler? You mean his opinion matters now suddenly?

The 2008 nominee is dead, and by the time Trump had even started campaigning, was in an advanced deteriorating state. He was acting extremely out of character in nearly all decisions he was making.

Trump ran on a conservative ticket. And as a billionaire businessman who became a billionaire long before his "reality show", he's been dealing with politicians for most of his adult life. He knew everyone there was to know and had all the necessary resources to put together a brutally efficient campaign. He had only a half dozen policy-based talking points, and he pounded them non-stop. The only other things he talked about was the proven negative track record(s) of his opponents. "Bash the opposition for their mistakes/failures and show how you'll fix it". It worked. There's nothing hysterical there.

That you think Trump's election had anything to do with hysterics shows that you're still too busy pointing fingers at everyone else to understand that the DNC has employed a divisive and policy-lacking strategy that has made them look quite terrible. And rather than learning from that mistake with the election of Trump, they've gone and ramped it up. If they lose this year, it'll be their own doing. Nobody's fault but their own.

Sorry, but Obama vs Romney in 2012 imho was the most conventional, normal presidential race I can imagine. It doesnt hold a candle to the shitshow we got in 2016, and that we're guaranteed to get again in 2020.

The Republican primary was a shitshow in both 2012 and 2016. Bernie vs Biden has been pretty typical for a primary, the only real controversy came from Trump

Ok, but the Republican primary is the Republican primary... when has it ever not been a shitshow? Remember 2008 when Mike Huckabee was the front runner for a week? Remember 2000, when Bush went extremely dirty against McCain?

Seems to support my argument that this election hasn't been particularly eventful. Sure there's a lot of things outside of the election that have happened, but that hasn't exactly impacted the primary process and have largely been dealt with outside of that process.
