My preferred solution would be that the EU offers the Brits an extension until Dec 31 2019 which emphatically rules out any further extension under any circumstances.
This way, everyone either has enough time to prepare for a hard brexit, or to come up with a softer brexit, or to cancel brexit altogether.
And it would give the UK enough time to hold a new general election or a new referendum if they want to.

Idk if they'd actually get something done by that point. The problem is that they've already had a really long time during which close to nothing happened except for the last few weeks.
