Perot became an official Democrat after endorsed Democratic Gov. Ann Richards in her bid for re-election against Bush’s eldest son, Republican George W. Bush.

Perot ran as an independent against President Bush and Bill Clinton in 1992, winning about 19 percent of the national vote and 22 percent in Texas - votes the Bushes believe Perot siphoned away from the president.
