No coverage, like some peoples mind.....
Why are GPS transponders on the bottom of airplanes and why is there no coverage in remote places like Alaska?
Better get to work setting up some towers in the Alaskan wilderness...
There are no GPS transponders on commercial airliners. In fact, most aircraft don't have any GPS capability whatsoever (instead using radar transponders and ACARS). Newer aircraft have what is called an ADS-B transponder, which takes GPS data from a receiver, and sends that data to ADS-B stations on the ground (which is why that transponder is on the underside of the aircraft). An upgrade to the ADS-B system will come in future years, as low-Earth orbit satellites will take the place of the ground stations for taking ADS-B data from aircraft.
