They were great when we had domestic manufacturing. Now when we have wars the economy somewhere else is booming and a few guys here (related to Halliburton, Lockheed, Academi/Xe/Blackwater, etc) get much much richer.

The American public was largely cut out of the beneficiaries, we just send the men to die.

Being great for a few companies =/= being good for the economy overall. If you build trucks, put use those trucks to use doing productive work, etc, you are doing good for the economy. If you build Tomahawks at a million a shot and they explode after one use, they aren't adding any value to the economy. Total loss of resources.
