I agree. Everyone complains about prisons being above capacity and their answer is to go soft on crime. I'm of the opinion that we should build more prisons. Double, triple, whatever it takes.

Just locking more and more people up is not a solution. Letting crime go unpunished is no solution either. The only true, long-term solution is to fix the underlying issues which cause the crime, things like poverty, addiction, social tensions. In the meantime, a balance has to be found between deterrence and rehabilitation. The current laws in NY are clearly too soft. But this doesnt mean that a super-tough on crime policy would be more successful. The utter failure of the war on drugs is a cautionary tale.

Of course it is. If you commit a crime, you should face consequences. I agree that it's not a long term solution but locking more people up is preferable to people living in fear.

Now, I agree that we need to fix the "crime pipeline" so to speak, but we have pressing issues NOW.

i do find it a bit funny that we know prisons dont rehabilitate people, and create patterns of norms for crime in societies. AND we know that crime generally is at an all time low and continuing to drop. and yet here we have worries of public safety.

so it wont fix the core problem, and still we protect the safest society of all time at the cost of the minority community. just odd. if there's any time to take a hit on public safety to try and break a perpetuating issue its when you're most safe.

Im fine with this but we should make it more forgiving after you get out. If you have a clear record for ~3 years after you're out, you shouldn't have the record dragging you down for the rest of your life.

The Onion's version of Joe Biden is like what SNL did to Bernie Sanders
