Just locking more and more people up is not a solution. Letting crime go unpunished is no solution either. The only true, long-term solution is to fix the underlying issues which cause the crime, things like poverty, addiction, social tensions. In the meantime, a balance has to be found between deterrence and rehabilitation. The current laws in NY are clearly too soft. But this doesnt mean that a super-tough on crime policy would be more successful. The utter failure of the war on drugs is a cautionary tale.
Of course it is. If you commit a crime, you should face consequences. I agree that it's not a long term solution but locking more people up is preferable to people living in fear.
Now, I agree that we need to fix the "crime pipeline" so to speak, but we have pressing issues NOW.
