on social/cultural topics like civil rights, gay rights, diversity and equality, and immigration in particular, the country was lurching to the left even during the bush years. government spending had also increased substantially under bush due to his wars.

also note that the political success of the tea party mostly materialized between 2010 and 2014, in a post-bailout and post-obamacare world after several years of a Democrat in the WH. it did not come to form immediately after Obama's inauguration while the memories of the bush years were still super fresh.

It basically did form immediately, but the political success of the tea party didn't materialize until it got Koch money. They spent a bonkers amount busing in protesters and hiring professional speakers.

The idea that the Tea Party was a response to the left's social success and the idea that in 2008 we had just gotten off a giant lurch to the left is ridiculous.

That is not at all what moral foundation theory is about.

It divides morality into foundations of care / fairness / loyalty / authority / sanctity. Studies have demonstrated that liberals prioritize the first two, whereas conservatives apply all 5 to some degree. It's not surprising, then, that conservatives can understand liberal points on fairness and care whereas liberals struggle to understand conservative perspectives that include loyalty / authority / sanctity.

Conservatives will defer from one to the other, and don't necessarily care about a consistent foundation when doing so. When an authority says it's fine, then fairness gets moved back in importance, and when sanctity and authority are involved you might as well just ignore all the others. The reason liberals only use two of the five is because they seek a consistent system that doesn't require downplaying some elements in favor of others.

That's fucking nuts. Absolutely massive spikes in robberies and auto theft and a jump in burglary that seems small by comparison but would be big in a normal year unto itself.
Murder, rapes and shootings have sample sizes so small they jump around a lot each year (50% more shootings but 23% less dead = not statistically indicative). But holy hell there is just a gigantic crime wave shown by all the major trackers, particularly the offenses that are newly unpunished by jail.

Sounds like something a Miss America contestant would say.

who would have thought that letting certain crimes go unpunished would lead to an increase in these crimes?

I agree. Everyone complains about prisons being above capacity and their answer is to go soft on crime. I'm of the opinion that we should build more prisons. Double, triple, whatever it takes.
