and I've worked as a social worker with both the intellectually disabled and mentally ill for many many years and far more families than not get upset at that sort of insulting because they've heard their loved ones insulted

just because not everyone is offended doesn't mean we shouldn't look at ourselves in the mirror and realize that continuing to use these words specifically to exclude and push the narrative of a person's inadequacy is not moving past what it once meant it's the exact same thing as it's always been used as to separate those with disability

Trump being politically undesirable to many doesn't make using slurs any more acceptable

People that are mentally retarded are often viewed and have been historically viewed as less. Ascribing that label to someone you don't like is basically saying "x behavior or act is like these lesser peoples behavior so you are lesser like they are"

I tend to be fairly insensitive but having worked with autistic people awhile back in my life i was exposed to how people are trying to change this notion that they are less. We didn't refer to them as patients but participants. Idk, once you are exposed to their humanity for enough time you start to shift away from words like retarded or making fun of such people.

I guess the thing is I dont think of myself or other people with similar conditions as less so I have never seen it as an issue, I laugh when they say it on southpark, and it's never aimed at jimmy or timmy there either.
I never attack anyone anymore, I grew up so I have no need for the word or any use for it but I still hesitate to ban words.
