It requires far more land to feed livestock than to raise greens. It also requires pesticides.

Well if it's not really viable than I'm not going to do anything. By merely going from buying one set of things at the grocery store to the other, the difference in suffering is an order of magnitude, and that doesn't involve any additional obligations or costs.

I suppose we can compare this to an environmentalist dude who works in DC but lives 2 hours away. He can sacrifice livelihood to live biking distance away from work or he can be part of the problem and eat vegetables.

If you're not actively donating money to buy malaria nets in Africa (etc.) you're effectively a murderer, and thus you can't morally oppose murder.
Only the last part of the sentence is not true.

Not a murderer, but equally responsible for the end of a life.

I like your effective altruistic example

The most moral thing is for everyone to work for the good of the world, and actual work i.e. socially productive labor, technological innovation, or scientific investigation, and not moving money around, and use ("own") no more than you need. Anything less is not only the suffering of others but the eventual suffering of yourself.
And no part of that is untrue. Communism will eventually prevail.
