Lets say we ignore the fact that Trump just today is threatening Russia with increased sanctions and tariffs and take it that Trump is aligning more with Russia
Why is this a bad thing? There are clear arguments for why, in a multipolar world, it makes more sense to bring Russia on the side of the the US against the competitor we share in common, China. It was the explicit goal of Obama in his term and the point of his Russia reset. Meanwhile the adversarial approach to Russia and attempts to engage them militarily and with hostile economic pressure have resulted in not only aligning Russia closer with China, but even alienating India and South Africa and aligning them more with a Russia-China world order.

Its the same question Obama and Mitt Romney had to answer, who is our greatest geopolitical adversary? Do you believe its Russia?

Obama's administration wanted to reset relations with Russia, it did not seek to align itself with Russia in the sense that the Kremlin spokesman is talking about. Trump isn't just being friendlier to Russia, he's turning US foreign policy to align with Russia's interests. He's abandoning Ukraine and being hostile to our European allies. This isn't some strategic pivot, it's a completely visceral move by Trump to align with Putin because he has some weird love of the guy, possibly because of kompromat.

This is just you trying to sanewash Trump's actions.

The Obama administration most certainly sought to align with Russia in order to oppose China together. It was right there in the stated goals of the 'pivot to east asia'. Obama had a direct stratrgic goal to serve American national interests and those happened to align with Russian interests. Mitt Romney famously criticized Obama as aligning with Putin and Obama retorted by saying the cold war is over and the 1980s called and want their foreign policy back.

Trump not only stated his strategic plan and why this realignment away from military confrontation and towards economic competition is in our national interests, he formalized that as the Trump Doctrine. Eight years ago. You are still today trying to engage in vain conspiracy theories about Russiaburger like its 2017. Its kompromat. Its collusion. He's actually a black widow agent named Krasnov. But whatever you imagine it is, somehow Obama doing the same thing for the same reason was a-okay and we can't possibly explain Trump's reason as being consistent with the reason he laid out as his formal foreign policy doctrine
