It's a big and still ongoing alignment which causes figures like Kristol to effectively become Democrats, or politically homeless. This does not, however, make him a liberal, he's still a conservative on everything else, the economy, social issues, etc.

This study was done a long time ago comparing political ideology to personality. The scientists originally lied because they were so ashamed of the result.

The result of the experiment of course was that left ideologies tend to have more individuals that are neurotic and emotionally imbalanced. The intelligence was fairly level across the spectrum.
