could you explain to me how kata'ib hezbollah (an iraqi group) flags being waved, makes the president's unhinged war threats against iran any more reasonable? this was not a random provocation by iran, those ppl were protesting US bombings in iraq and syria on 29 dec, killing at least 25.

it's funny how you ppl pretend to support the bs 'anti-interventionist' angle when trump moves troops from protecting the kurds to protect oil fields and his fellow war criminals in saudi-arabia, but when he's threatening to start a whole new, and significantly larger military conflict with iran, you'll happily defend his warmongering.

So what's actually going on at the NYTimes?
This isn't just off the mark or bad reporting, its full blown Iranian propaganda. Some of what they're reporting is just blatantly false and skewed to defend Iran.

There has been 3 months of anti-government protests in Iraq that were escalating as the Sunni population were in a soft rebellion against the Iranian-backed Shia government, protesting against corruption, living conditions, low wages, foreign interference, etc. These protests escalated and three major Iranian-backed Shia militias set about crushing them brutally in a series of massacres with 500+ dead and 21000+ wounded since October. Then after one of the Shia militias (kata'ib hezbollah) attacked a US position and killed an American the other day, the US responded with airstrikes on the hezbollah group. And the people who showed up to besiege our embassy are literally the members of the three Iranian-backed militias, their soldiers, their leaders. They weren't just waving Hezbollah flags and planting the flags and writing hezbollah slogans and chanting death to america, they were literally being led by the three heads of the Iranian militias, Qais al-Khazali, of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Hadi al-Amiri of the Badr Organization and Jamal Jaafar Ibrahimi of Kata’ib Hezbollah.

But in the NYTimes this became "Hundreds of Iraqi mourners" and "protesters" and they even published one saying "Now protesters have turned their sights on the U.S." That last one is especially egregious, because these are the groups that have been slaughtering the protesters for the past few months, not the protesters. I mean jesus christ, how does that even make it to print? How does that get posted?

This is simply propaganda by enemies of the US at this point. I mean, even RT is going to give you a less biased view of the world. The NYT is publishing anti-American Iranian propaganda and lies.

Perhaps it's just a case of severe (potentially terminal) TDS? In their fervent urge to shit on Trump on any occasion, the NYT seems willing to pick up any point of view that makes Trump look weak or bad, even if it means spreading the propaganda of a murderous, islamistic theocracy which has been one of our country's major geopolitical rivals for decades.


The really sad thing is that their propaganda and bullshit is more sneaky and appears more credible on the surface, so that even well-educated people will fall for it unless they spend extraordinary amounts of time and effort to inform themselves.
In the end, lots of smart and highly educated people look down upon those who consume Fox News and its blatant propaganda, while considering themselves and their sources (like the NYT) to be superior and more credible - even though they actually consume just as much warped propaganda, just presented in a more sophisticated fashion.

Then, you end up with smug little liberal assholes saying things like "educate yourself" or "reality has a liberal bias".

Reality has a truth bias, hence why most of those "educated" people are working making 0-20k a year with their victim hood degrees. Reality always wins, it's a beautiful thing.

some of those statements are outright ridiculous, like claiming all those protesters were 'iranian militia' - where's the proof for that? oh right, there is none because it's complete bs. also, this being a response to US bombings is not mutually exclusive to it being the culmination of a longer escalation -"the straw that broke the camel's back" - unsurprisingly the dec 29 airstrikes were not the only ones, trump's 'foreign policy' is firmly embracing the escalation with iran angle...

the pearl clutching over the US being "attacked" is particularly egregious. don't get me wrong, those hezbollah militias are certainly not good guys, but the whole framing of this, conveniently ignoring that the US attacked and invaded the country under false pretenses in the first place, and that it's them who are occupying and disproportionally murdering iraqi citizens, is just mindblowing.

imagine china invading the US to "defend" themselves against unjust wars by bombing evangelical christian and military industrial complex strongholds in america - objectively much more dangerous and and deadly groups.
