It's rather like in the US, with strong polarization on both sides. Both Remainers and Leavers had around 48% of the vote if you add the various parties up, the rest is made up by smaller local parties.
But since Labour couldnt get its shit together, the first past the post system allowed the Tories to win a strong majority with just 43.6% of the vote (Labour stood at 32.1).
So the Tories have the strongest public support of all parties, but it's still not overwhelming. I would compare it a bit to the 2008 US presidential election, when Obama ran ahead of McCain by 7% in the popular vote and got a landslide majority in the EC. Back then, it was clear that he had a mandate by the people, just like Johnson does now - but there was still a very large part of the country opposed to him. Same situation for the Tories.
