How does it hurt the cause when it appeals to folks who keep experiencing record lows in a world they are constantly told it is heating up
Because it's a low IQ take that misrepresents the theory of the case of climate change. No one ever said that there would be no more cold days. The prediction of science is that climate change will make cold days more rare and hot days more frequent, and that the long-term average temperatures will rise almost everywhere in the world. Long-term here referring to timespans of more than a decade.
Furthermore, weather is an extremely complex system. It is not necessarily a contradiction for generally rising temperatures to lead to an increased likelihood of cold spells in some specific places.
