The distinction between rich and upper middle class is pretty arbitrary.

Id say Bernie isn't really rich since his money is likely tied up in his retirement savings and property, which at his age should be pretty high since its been accruing gains for a very long time. Its not in a large company with lots of cash flow or liquid.

It's a lose-lose sitaution. If Bernie didn't have a 2.5 million net worth they'd say that he's too ineffective to do anything; he has no power. When Bernie has a decent amount and that too accumulated over a period of time which is a reasonable net worth for someone his age he still gets blasted.
