DeSantis and Trump are not the same.

DeSantis has ideas, policies and a history to back them up. He also has people in Washington who will work with him.

Trump, nobody can tell you what his policies are NOW, and Washington hates him.

I can see that as a major factor. What do you think about the NY house?

"Crime being out of control" is one of the GOP's favorite talking points, they deploy it in pretty much every election cycle, whether it's true or not. But since New York's bail reform, crime has indeed gone up substantially in the state. Plenty of mainstream and/or left-leaning outlets and pundits have admitted to that. So I would say it's a combination of these factors:

Republicans had a very strong candidate at the top of the ticket in Lee Zeldin, Democrats had a weak incumbent in Kathy Hochul, and the Republican message in New York about crime and law and order fell of fertile ground because it addressed a real issue.

Simply put, just like Republicans got punished unexpectedly hard for nominating weak candidates and/or election deniers, Democrats seem to have been punished hard for leaving the crime issue unaddressed for too long in NY.

I think the issue is, yes crime is up but conservatives think cities are mad max hellscapes where you're risking your own life just walking down the street. That doesn't really square with reality though and a lot of people living in those cities can see that.

We're still at like half the levels of the nineties.

At this point, a Trump vs DeSantis primary feels inevitable. There can't possibly be a better window of opportunity for DeSantis in the future, he's as popular and strong right now as he's gonna get. If he wants to become president one day (which he clearly does), then he has to take a plunge now.

What you're describing is essentially Trump's last line of defense; an implicit threat: "I have the ability to drag this out into a bruising, divisive primary that will cause the party to lose everything in the general election. Your chances of winning the presidency are higher if you hand me the nomination than if you go with someone else, because if I'm going down, I'll burn down the whole party."

The big question is how to coalesce the party around DeSantis without turning off Trump's base or making them feel like the party establishment betrayed their guy.

The early nineties in NYC were basically a real life version of mad max, so that's maybe not the standard you want to compare yourself with if you're in charge of the city. ;)

Trump doesn't sound like a good teammate if this is his attitude. I would place the future of my party ahead of my own personal desire for power and glory, but that's just me.
