Where has the media done this? I'd like to see a couple examples.
I'm all in favor of accuracy. It's true that just because the founder has said racist stuff, doesn't mean the group is white supremacist. I don't really pay attention to the Trump nutter groups so I don't know if the Proud Boys are white supremacist, white nationalist, have ties to white nationalists, or what.
Although just looking on Google, when you throw up the white power symbol sitting with Roger Stone, it kind of invites the white supremacist label.
somewhere between the many black/asian/hispanic/pacific islander members and their explicit pledge against racism and bigotry, I think calling them a white supremacist group seems unreasonable.
misogynistic, islamophobic, xenophobic, maybe. But telling the black guy he's a white supremacist always baffles me
just like labeling the "okay" hand sign a 'white supremacist symbol'. Because in their circular definitions, they'll point to the Proud Boys using it as evidence.
World's worst white supremacists:

anyways as to the media, here's one example right from NPR:
https://www.npr.org/2020/09/30/918483794/from-debate-stage-trump-declines-to-denounce-white-supremacyQuote
Trump eventually responded to Wallace's question by referring to a white supremacist group, saying, "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I'll tell you what: Somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left."
I mean, just like the Biden campaign tweet about Rittenhouse, that's straight up libel. Its false, its inflammatory, and they know its false and inflammatory.
But more telling are the myriads of articles from outlets who are smart enough to know not to directly call the proud boys white supremacists but instead conspicuously fail to make that distinction and fact check the obvious error
ex;
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/proud-boys-celebrate-after-trump-s-debate-call-out-n1241512They never point out in that article that Proud Boys are not white supremacists, nor do any of the sources that vilify them like the ADL and SPLC actually label them white supremacists. Instead they just run the paragraph about white supremacists and Biden and Wallace's erroneous quotes next to calling the Proud Boys 'a violent, nationalistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and misogynistic hate group', all of which could at least be arguably true- but aren't whatsoever the same thing as
white supremacyThey had the opportunity to fact check something and inform their readers, and instead chose to mislead them, while NPR straight up lied to their readers, as Biden and Wallace lied to Americans
